Online physiotherapy for a slip disc

"Slip disc" is the common name for a disc bulge or herniation, where the soft centre of a spinal disc pushes outward and can irritate a nearby nerve. Despite the name, nothing slips out of place, and most disc problems improve without surgery. Physiotherapy helps you move with less pain while the disc settles, then builds the strength that protects your spine. Sessions available in English, Telugu, and Hindi, and you can ask for a female or male physiotherapist.

Why online physiotherapy works for slip disc

Disc problems are treated with movement, positions and graded exercise, so the core of treatment works well on video

Your physiotherapist watches how you bend, sit, get out of bed and lift at home, and changes the movements that keep irritating the disc

Daily sessions help most in the first weeks, when guidance on what to do and what to avoid matters most

You can share your MRI report on WhatsApp, and your physiotherapist explains it in plain language during the session

What we assess via video

Your MRI or X-ray report, if you have one
Whether pain stays in the back or neck, or travels into a leg or arm
Movements that ease or worsen your symptoms
Nerve checks: strength, sensation and reflex screening with guidance
Posture, work setup and lifting habits
Sleeping position and mattress

What treatment includes

Understanding your MRI, and what it does and does not mean
Directional exercises chosen from your movement assessment
Core and hip strengthening, progressed each week
Safe bending and lifting practice
Graded return to work, travel and floor sitting
A long-term home routine

How an online session works

1

Set up your space

Position your phone or laptop so your physiotherapist can see you move. You need about 2 metres of space.

2

Live assessment and treatment

Your physiotherapist watches your movement, corrects your form, and guides you through exercises in real time. Each session is 45 minutes to 1 hour.

3

Progress and adjust

Your physiotherapist tracks your improvement each session and adjusts exercises as you get stronger. You also receive exercises to practice between sessions.

What you need at home

A phone or laptop propped up to show your whole body
Floor space or a firm bed to lie on
A chair without wheels
Your MRI or X-ray report, if you have one

What a typical course looks like

Sessions 1 to 3

Screening, reviewing your scan, finding pain-easing positions and a safe daily routine.

Sessions 4 to 9

Directional and core exercises, walking, and changes to how you sit and sleep.

Sessions 10 to 14

Strengthening, bending and lifting practice, and a long-term plan.

This is a typical outline, not a fixed schedule. Your physiotherapist adjusts it to your progress and your doctor's advice.

Not sure where you stand? Take our free back pain self-check. It takes about three minutes.

When in-person care is better

Go to an emergency department immediately for numbness around the genitals or buttocks, new bladder or bowel problems, or weakness in the legs that is getting worse. For a neck disc, also seek urgent care for clumsy hands, difficulty walking or loss of balance. If a surgeon has advised urgent surgery, follow that advice. Your physiotherapist screens for all of these in the first session.

Frequently asked questions

Can a slip disc heal without surgery?
Most can. Studies that follow people with disc herniations over time often find the bulge shrinks, and many people recover well with time, activity and exercise. Surgery is usually considered for progressive weakness, bladder or bowel problems, or severe pain that has not improved after a good trial of treatment. Your physiotherapist will tell you honestly if you need a surgeon's opinion.
My MRI says L4-L5 disc bulge. Is it safe to exercise?
For most people, yes, and the right exercise is part of recovery. Exercises are chosen from how your symptoms respond to movement, so they start gently and build up. Disc bulges are also common in people with no pain at all, so the MRI is only one part of the picture.
Can a neck disc problem be treated online?
Yes. Neck disc problems are treated with posture work, neck and upper back exercises and nerve glides, all of which can be guided on video. Your physiotherapist also checks your desk, screen and pillow. Arm weakness, clumsy hands or difficulty walking need a doctor first.
Should I wear a lumbar belt?
A belt can give short-term comfort during a bad flare or a long journey. Wearing one all day for weeks can leave the back muscles weaker. Your physiotherapist will advise when it helps and how to stop using it.
