Online physiotherapy after knee replacement

The weeks after a knee replacement decide how well the new knee will bend, straighten and carry you. Recovery depends on daily exercise, and most of it happens at home. Online sessions give you a physiotherapist watching every repetition, without a painful trip to a clinic in the early weeks. Sessions available in English, Telugu, and Hindi, and you can ask for a female or male physiotherapist.

Why online physiotherapy works for knee replacement rehabilitation

Travelling to a clinic in the first weeks after surgery is painful and tiring, and that is when missed sessions do the most harm

Your physiotherapist sees your home: the height of your bed and chair, your bathroom and your stairs, and coaches you to use them safely

Bend and straightening angles can be estimated on video and tracked session by session, so you can see your progress

A son or daughter in another city or abroad can join the video call and receive progress updates

Many patients start with the hospital physiotherapist or home visits, then continue online once they are home and steady with a walker

What we assess via video

Knee bend and straightening
Swelling, warmth and how the wound looks on camera
Thigh muscle activation: can you lift your straight leg?
Walking with a walker, stick or no aid
Getting up from bed, chair and toilet
Stairs and steps at home

What treatment includes

Range of motion exercises with daily targets
Thigh and hip strengthening
Walking training, from walker to stick to walking on your own
Stair practice
Advice on swelling and pain
Home safety setup and coaching for family
Balance training to reduce the risk of falls

How an online session works

1

Set up your space

Position your phone or laptop so your physiotherapist can see you move. You need about 2 metres of space.

2

Live assessment and treatment

Your physiotherapist watches your movement, corrects your form, and guides you through exercises in real time. Each session is 45 minutes to 1 hour.

3

Progress and adjust

Your physiotherapist tracks your improvement each session and adjusts exercises as you get stronger. You also receive exercises to practice between sessions.

What you need at home

A phone or laptop on a stand, or a family member to hold it
A firm chair with armrests
Your walker or stick
A family member or helper nearby for the first few sessions
Your surgeon's discharge notes and any restrictions

What a typical course looks like

Weeks 1 to 2

Controlling swelling, straightening the knee fully, getting the thigh muscle working, and walking safely with a walker.

Weeks 3 to 6

Bending past 90 degrees, building strength, moving to a stick, and stairs.

Week 7 onwards

Walking without an aid, balance, longer walks and getting back to daily activities.

This is a typical outline, not a fixed schedule. Your physiotherapist adjusts it to your progress and your doctor's advice.

When in-person care is better

Contact your surgeon or hospital urgently for a calf that is swollen, painful or red, sudden breathlessness or chest pain, fever, or a wound that is red, hot or leaking. In the first days after surgery, the hospital physiotherapist or a home visit is usually best. Online sessions work well once you are home and can stand with a walker with someone nearby.

Frequently asked questions

How soon after knee replacement can online physiotherapy start?
Many patients start once they are home from hospital, usually within the first one to two weeks, as long as they can stand with a walker and have someone nearby. If your surgeon wants hands-on therapy first, start with local in-person care or our home visits in Vijayawada, and switch to online later.
My mother had a knee replacement and I live abroad. How does this work?
You can book on WhatsApp from anywhere. Your mother has live sessions at home, and you can join the video call from your phone. You receive progress updates on her bend, straightening and walking, and Nuprie, our WhatsApp assistant, checks in for your feedback. Our page on physiotherapy for elderly parents explains how families use the service.
How much should the knee bend after replacement?
Many surgeons aim for at least about 90 degrees of bend by around six weeks, with more over the following months, and a knee that straightens fully. Your surgeon may give you specific targets. Your physiotherapist tracks both bend and straightening every few sessions.
Are 21 sessions enough?
For many people, 21 daily sessions cover the most important early part of recovery. Some need more, especially after both knees are replaced or if the knee is stiff. Extensions are available at the same per-session rate, and your physiotherapist will tell you honestly whether you need them.

Arranging this for a parent?

Many of our patients are older adults whose sons and daughters live in other cities or abroad. You can book on WhatsApp from anywhere, join sessions by video and receive progress updates.
