Online physiotherapy after hip replacement

After a hip replacement, recovery means walking well again, getting strength back around the hip and avoiding falls, while following any movement precautions your surgeon has given. Most of this work happens at home, day after day, which is where online sessions help. Sessions available in English, Telugu, and Hindi, and you can ask for a female or male physiotherapist.

Why online physiotherapy works for hip replacement rehabilitation

Your physiotherapist checks how you get in and out of bed, on and off the toilet and into a chair at home, which is where hip precautions matter most

Walking practice happens in your own corridors and on your own stairs

Daily sessions without travel make it easier to keep going through the weeks recovery needs

Family members can join to learn how to help safely, and to follow progress from another city

How an online session works

1

Set up your space

Position your phone or laptop so your physiotherapist can see you move. You need about 2 metres of space.

2

Live assessment and treatment

Your physiotherapist watches your movement, corrects your form, and guides you through exercises in real time. Each session is 45 minutes to 1 hour.

3

Progress and adjust

Your physiotherapist tracks your improvement each session and adjusts exercises as you get stronger. You also receive exercises to practice between sessions.

What you need at home

A phone or laptop on a stand, or a helper to hold it
A firm chair with armrests at a good height
Your walker or stick
A helper nearby for the first few sessions
Your surgeon's discharge instructions and precautions

What a typical course looks like

Weeks 1 to 2

Safe transfers, walking with a walker, and gentle hip and thigh exercises within your precautions.

Weeks 3 to 6

Building strength, moving towards a stick, stairs and longer walks.

Week 7 onwards

Walking without an aid, balance, and returning to normal routines as your surgeon allows.

This is a typical outline, not a fixed schedule. Your physiotherapist adjusts it to your progress and your doctor's advice.

When in-person care is better

Seek urgent medical help for a calf that is swollen, red or painful, sudden breathlessness or chest pain, fever, a wound that is red or leaking, or sudden severe hip pain with the leg looking shorter or turned, which can mean dislocation. For an older person who is very frail or cannot stand even with help, start with in-person care, then move online.

Frequently asked questions

Can hip replacement rehab be done safely online?
For most people who are home and can stand with a walker with a helper nearby, yes. Your physiotherapist follows your surgeon's precautions, watches every exercise and transfer on camera, and keeps the plan within what is safe for you. If something needs a hands-on check, they will tell you.
My father had surgery for a hip fracture. Is the rehab the same?
It is similar, with more focus on balance and preventing another fall, since a fall is usually what caused the fracture. Your physiotherapist will advise whether the Ortho post-op package or the longer Geriatric programme fits better.
What are hip precautions?
Some surgical approaches come with temporary rules, such as not bending the hip past a certain angle, not crossing your legs or not twisting on the operated leg. Others have few or none. Precautions depend on your surgeon and the approach used, so always follow their instructions. Your physiotherapist builds the exercises around them.
When can I walk without a walker?
It varies a lot. Many people move from a walker to a stick within a few weeks and walk without an aid after that, but age, strength and the type of surgery all matter. Your physiotherapist makes each change only when your walking is steady enough to be safe.

Arranging this for a parent?

Many of our patients are older adults whose sons and daughters live in other cities or abroad. You can book on WhatsApp from anywhere, join sessions by video and receive progress updates.
