Wall Finger Walk
The wall finger walk uses your fingers to creep up a wall, lifting the arm a little higher each time. It gently stretches a stiff shoulder, and because you can mark how high you reach, it also lets you see your progress week by week.

How to do it
- 1
Stand facing a wall, about an arm's length away, with your fingertips on the wall at chest height.
- 2
Slowly walk your fingers up the wall, letting the arm rise.
- 3
Stop when you feel a stretch, not sharp pain. Step closer to the wall as the arm rises.
- 4
Hold for 10 to 15 seconds at the top.
- 5
Walk your fingers back down slowly. You can mark the highest point with a pencil or sticky note.
How many
5 to 10 repetitions, 2 to 3 times a day.
Common mistakes
Shrugging the shoulder up towards the ear. Keep it relaxed and down.
Leaning back or arching the back to reach higher.
Forcing past sharp pain. A stretch is fine, sharp pain is not.
Letting the arm drop at the end. Walk the fingers back down.
Make it easier
Start lower, or stand side-on to the wall to work the arm out to the side in a smaller range.
Make it harder
Stand side-on to the wall and walk the fingers up to the side, which is usually harder. Your physiotherapist will add stretches for turning the arm out and reaching behind the back.
Who it helps
When to stop and check
Stop if pain lasts more than an hour or two after the exercise, or if the shoulder feels worse the next day, and tell your physiotherapist. After shoulder surgery, follow your surgeon's protocol.
Not sure you are doing it right? A physiotherapist can watch you on a video call, correct your form and build a full programme around it.
