Online physiotherapy for knee pain

Knee pain treatment is exercise-based: strengthening the muscles around the knee, improving flexibility, and retraining movement patterns. These are exactly the things a physiotherapist can guide and correct via video. Sessions available in English, Telugu, and Hindi.

Written by Dr. V. B. Rajendra Prasad, MPT, licensed in the US and UK. 20 years of clinical experience.

Why online physiotherapy works for knee pain and osteoarthritis

Knee strengthening exercises are the primary treatment for most knee conditions, and your physiotherapist can observe and correct your form via video

Squatting, stair climbing, and walking patterns can all be demonstrated and assessed on camera

Daily exercise consistency is critical for knee pain. Online sessions eliminate the barrier of traveling to a clinic.

Your physiotherapist can assess how you move in your actual environment: your stairs, your floor-sitting habits, your footwear

What we assess via video

Knee range of motion and swelling
Walking and stair climbing patterns
Squatting depth and quality
Muscle strength around the knee
Balance and stability
Footwear and daily activity patterns

What treatment includes

Progressive strengthening for quadriceps, hamstrings, and hip muscles
Flexibility exercises for tight muscles
Balance and stability training
Walking and movement pattern correction
Activity modification and load management
Weight management guidance when relevant

How an online session works

1

Set up your space

Position your phone or laptop so your physiotherapist can see you move. You need about 2 metres of space.

2

Live assessment and treatment

Your physiotherapist watches your movement, corrects your form, and guides you through exercises in real time. Each session is 45 minutes to 1 hour.

3

Progress and adjust

Your physiotherapist tracks your improvement each session and adjusts exercises as you get stronger. You also receive exercises to practice between sessions.

When in-person care is better

If your knee is locked and you cannot bend or straighten it at all, or if there is significant trauma with severe swelling, see a doctor in person first. For most chronic knee pain and arthritis, online physiotherapy is effective.

Frequently asked questions

Can knee arthritis be treated online?
Yes. Exercise-based treatment is the first-line recommendation for knee osteoarthritis worldwide. Your physiotherapist prescribes and guides strengthening, flexibility, and functional exercises via video. Research consistently shows that supervised exercise programs improve pain and function in knee arthritis, regardless of delivery mode.
How does my physiotherapist see my knee through video?
Your physiotherapist will ask you to position your camera to show your full body or lower half. They observe how you walk, squat, climb stairs, and perform specific test movements. They can assess range of motion, swelling (compared to your other knee), and movement quality. The assessment is thorough and guides your entire treatment plan.
Do I need any equipment for online knee physiotherapy?
Most exercises use your body weight. Your physiotherapist may suggest a resistance band (available for under ₹200) for some strengthening exercises. A chair and a towel are commonly used props. No special equipment is needed to start.
